Chiropractic
the foundation of what we are
While commonly associated with pain relief, chiropractic is actually far more deep and enriching. The foundation of holistic chiropractic care embraces, respects, and works with the incredible “power” that exists in and around us. For many, this would be God or Yahweh. A favorite saying in our profession is, “the power that made the body, heals the body.”
When “life” is able to fully express in its natural state, amazing beauty unfolds. When the natural forces of life are interfered with, the potential for optimal expression is hindered. This is so true for our health and well-being.
When the interference is removed, and the innate intelligence from our Creator is unleashed, balance and healing are naturally restored.
Honestly, the chiropractic profession began (in 1895) when the founder, D.D. Palmer “adjusted” a man (named Harvey Lillard) who had been deaf for 17 years after an injury to his spine. His hearing was restored following the adjustments … and so the research began.
Chiropractic adjustments are specific thrusts delivered to the joints of the spine and body where there is restriction and incorrect positioning … which is frequently accompanied by inflammation and irritation of surrounding soft tissue, including sensitive nerve endings. This is why there is a link between adjustments and pain relief!
Like a rubber band wrapped too tightly around your finger, when the interference is removed and the natural movement of the body is restored, pain, swelling, and irritation also subside.
BUT PLEASE REMEMBER … nerve endings responsible for pain signals are NOT the only soft tissues that can be affected. The nervous system is vitally important and does more than simply transmit pain.
Many people, including babies and children, have subluxations and improper function without pain as an indicator that something is wrong. Dysfunction can present in a number of different ways, from colic to seizures, to digestive distress and immune imbalances … even deafness!
So to sum it up simply, the foundation of who we are revolves around the concept of keeping us at our greatest state of function and full expression.
Why wait for symptoms to appear before you correct a problem?

CHIROPRACTIC FOR EVERYONE
Understanding how the movement of the structural body effects the flow and function of the body paints a very different picture of what chiropractic can offer. If there is a connection between hearing and the structural body, and a man’s hearing could be restored after 17 years, what else could chiropractic potentially offer your family?
Our profession has grown primarily from word of mouth of amazed patients that “believe” in what chiropractic care can do. As more and more open-minded practitioners hear, see and understand the results chiropractic is offering the world, more and more referrals are also made.
Midwives and OB’s refer patients for help in managing pregnancy-associated pain but also in assisting in breach babies and easier labor for mom and baby.
Mama’s bring their babies for breastfeeding issues, digestive distress, ear infections, colic and cranial work … and just overall wellness.
Teenagers and adults find relief for a wide variety of issues from … headaches and TMJ, plantar fasciitis, stress management and anxiety, gut dysfunction and bowel issues … even to support the function of their immune system!
There’s even been many reports of resolution from fertility problems!!
So why does everyone think you have to be in pain to see a chiropractor?
It’s like thinking you can only see a dentist when you have a cavity … it doesn’t make sense when your health is a priority.
Like most things in our world today, the influence of money began to move our profession into a pain relieving niche so that insurance would cover visits. While we do appreciate that insurance can help in times of injury and pain, that is not where our story ends.
When you begin to understand the true depth to what chiropractic can offer, it becomes second nature to see babies and children being adjusted. It becomes a priority to establish more routine care … like drinking water, getting fresh air, showering regularly and brushing your teeth. It becomes self-care for our “vehicle in life”.

EDUCATION OF CHIROPRACTORS
Believe it or not there is considerable commonality between the educational requirements of chiropractors and medical doctors. Undergraduate and specialized graduate school studies in basic sciences (like biochemistry, pathology, anatomy, physiology, etc) are required for both practitioners.
The largely defining difference between the two types of health care providers is in their focus of training and treatment. Medical doctors spend more time studying pathology immunology, and pharmacology, which is the study of what makes man sick and the use of pharmaceutical drugs to treat symptoms.
Much of the educational focus for chiropractors is on how the human body works and natural ways to restore its natural physiology.
Research into this comparison of education shows that chiropractic students receive more training in anatomy, physiology, diagnosis, radiology, orthopedics, adjusting and kinesiology. Not including the required clinical practice or “residency” period, chiropractic students complete more classroom hours from an accredited chiropractic college than students at accredited medical schools.
Before sitting at the state level examination to receive a license to practice, chiropractors must pass four levels of national board exams and a physical therapy exam.
I share this information to bring light to the intensity of our education and training as there is great unawareness of the standards our profession holds on education for Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.). Our profession takes great pride in spending much of our training in how to support human homeostasis (natural balance) and finding solutions that allows the body to heal itself.
Just like modern medicine, there is no magic pill or adjustment to restore continued damage from unhealthy daily habits. This is also why a portion of our education involves studying the supportive healthy lifestyle choices that support human physiology.
While the main path of chiropractic education is similar for all students, it also allows for areas of different focus depending depending on the desire of the doctor. There is additional training in nutrition, pregnancy and pediatrics, neurology, sports, rehab and spinal curve correction, and so many more.
Another area that creates different types of chiropractic treatment options is in the area of adjusting techniques. There are many different techniques and modalities available for chiropractic treatment, allowing the doctor different options in their “toolbox” to help different people and different conditions.

DR LAUREN’S TECHNIQUES
HANDS-ON ADJUSTING
Diversified Technique
The most commonly used technique by chiropractors that involves a short (low-amplitude), quick (high-velocity) thrust over restricted joints with the intent of restoring proper motion and function to the area.
Instrument Adjusting
ArthroStim
An adjusting instrument that delivers 12-14 incremental thrusts per second allowing for a more gentle yet still powerful adjustment in cases where manual adjusting is not preferred.
Pregnancy
Webster Technique
A very gentle chiropractic technique with a specific sacral analysis and adjustment that is delivered to a pregnant woman with the goal of restoring proper sacral function and facilitating proper pelvic function.
sacral + pelvic blocking
SOT Technique
An extremely gentle orthopedic technique that uses pelvic blocks (or “wedges”) to induce a structural change by allowing the bones and soft tissue structures to gently “unwind”.
Cranial Care & Digestive Work
Manual Therapy
Following careful examination, tension in tissues of the gut and/or restriction of the various areas of the cranium (including the TMJ) are gently released with manual pressure in specific directions and areas.
DECOMPRESSION
Cox Flexion Distraction
This gentle, non-surgical, hands-on decompression technique utilizes a specialized table in order to help relieve pain from spinal disc problems, facet syndrome, stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and more.
Manual Muscle Testing
Applied Kinesiology
A comprehensive assessment and treatment technique utilizing a number of factors including manual muscle testing, specific joint mobilization, cranial techniques, meridian skills, clinical nutrition, dietary management, reflex procedures, and more.
Drop-Table Assisted Adjusting
Thompson Technique
This gentle, non-surgical, hands-on decompression technique utilizes a specialized table in order to help relieve pain from spinal disc problems, facet syndrome, stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and more.
